Why I'm Skipping Yaoyao's Banner in Genshin Impact
Discover why pulling for Yaoyao in Genshin Impact Version 3.4 is risky, and learn smarter ways to obtain this adorable Dendro healer for free!
So here's the thing - when Version 3.4 dropped and everyone was buzzing about the adorable Yaoyao finally becoming playable, I had to take a step back and think critically. Sure, she's cute as a button with her little bunny companion, and yes, having a Dendro healer sounds amazing on paper. But after doing some math and strategic planning, I realized pulling specifically for Yaoyao might be one of the worst decisions I could make right now.
The Pity System is Too Precious to Gamble

Let me break down why this matters so much. Every time I pull on a character banner, I'm building toward that magical number - the pity system that guarantees a 5-star character. The soft pity kicks in around 70 pulls, and hard pity at 90. Right now, I'm sitting at 45 pulls with a guaranteed featured character lined up from my last 50/50 loss.
The temptation is real, I won't lie. "Just do a ten-pull," the devil on my shoulder whispers. "You'll get a 4-star guaranteed, and it might be Yaoyao!" But here's the brutal truth: even though 4-star characters have boosted rates during their featured banners, there's absolutely no guarantee that 4-star will be Yaoyao. It could be Xinyan (who I already have at C6), or Yun Jin, or worse - it could be a weapon.
But the real nightmare scenario? Getting lucky (or unlucky, depending on how you look at it) and pulling Alhaitham or Xiao early. Don't get me wrong - both are excellent characters. However, I've been saving for months for upcoming banners, specifically eyeing Hu Tao and Yelan in the second phase. If I accidentally pull a 5-star now, I'm essentially throwing away my guaranteed pull that I worked so hard to secure.
There Are Way Better Ways to Get Yaoyao
Here's where things get interesting, and honestly, where my decision became crystal clear. Unlike most character releases in Genshin Impact, Yaoyao isn't locked behind the gacha system exclusively. Version 3.4 brought us the Lantern Rite Festival - Liyue's grandest celebration - and with it comes an incredible opportunity.
The event allows me to choose one free 4-star Liyue character. Let me repeat that: completely free. No wishes spent, no pity broken, just good old-fashioned event completion. The roster includes:
-
Yaoyao (brand new!)
-
Xingqiu
-
Xiangling
-
Beidou
-
Ningguang
-
Chongyun
-
Xinyan
-
Yun Jin
-
Yanfei
Now, some players might argue that they'd rather use this free selection to increase Constellations on their already-built characters. That's totally valid! Xingqiu's C6 is incredible, and Xiangling gets significantly better with Constellations. But for me, getting a brand new character for free while preserving my hard-earned pity? That's an absolute no-brainer.
The Permanent Banner Factor
There's another crucial point that many players overlook in their excitement. Once Yaoyao's rate-up period ends with the first half of Version 3.4, she doesn't just disappear into the void. She gets added to the standard pool of characters available on every single banner in the game.
What does this mean practically? Well, every time I:
-
Pull on a limited character banner
-
Pull on the weapon banner
-
Use my free Acquaint Fates on the standard banner
-
Get lucky with an early 4-star
There's a chance (albeit small) that I could get Yaoyao. Will it happen tomorrow? Probably not. But over the course of months and years of playing Genshin Impact, the odds of eventually pulling her become pretty decent. I've lost count of how many times I've randomly gotten 4-star characters I wasn't even trying for - just last month, I finally pulled my first Rosaria after playing since launch! 😅
Future Lantern Rites Mean More Chances
Lantern Rite is an annual event. If for some reason I decide I don't want to use my free character selection on Yaoyao this year (maybe I'm desperately hunting those Xingqiu Constellations), I can simply wait until 2025's Lantern Rite and pick her up then. Sure, that requires patience, but in a game that's designed to be played for years, what's the rush?
When Pulling for Yaoyao Actually Makes Sense
Now, I'm not saying Yaoyao is a bad character - far from it! She's actually quite versatile as both a healer and Dendro enabler. If I were in one of these situations, my advice would be completely different:
Scenario 1: You Actually Want Xiao or Alhaitham
If you're planning to pull for either of the featured 5-stars anyway, then by all means, go wild! Getting Yaoyao as a bonus while pulling for your desired 5-star is just the cherry on top. In this case, she's not the risk - she's a potential reward.
Scenario 2: You're at Zero Pity with No Plans
Maybe you just pulled your dream character and you're sitting at 0 pity with no immediate plans for future banners. Your account is stacked, you're happy with your roster, and you genuinely don't care about upcoming characters. In this rare situation, throwing some pulls at Yaoyao's banner might be reasonable (though I'd still recommend the free Lantern Rite option).
Scenario 3: You're a Whale
If money isn't an issue and you can afford to pull for every character regardless of pity implications, then obviously none of my advice applies to you. Enjoy your C6 R5 everything! 🐋
My Personal Strategy Moving Forward
| Priority | Character | Reason | Estimated Pulls Needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hu Tao | Need a Pyro DPS | 45 (guaranteed) |
| 2 | Yelan | Best Hydro support | 90 (50/50) |
| 3 | Future Archon | Always worth it | TBD |
| 4 | Yaoyao | Free from Lantern Rite | 0 |
This table represents my current pulling strategy. Notice how Yaoyao costs me absolutely zero wishes? That's the beauty of smart resource management in Genshin Impact. I get to expand my roster while maintaining my advantage for characters I genuinely want to pull for.
The Psychological Trap of FOMO
I think what HoYoverse understands really well is the psychology of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). They release these adorable, interesting characters with limited-time rate-ups, and our lizard brains scream "PULL NOW OR MISS OUT FOREVER!"
But that's simply not true, especially with 4-star characters. I've been playing since launch, and I can't tell you how many times characters I "missed" on their debut banners came back around. Gorou took forever to come home, but eventually he did. Same with Sayu, Sara, and countless others.
The real limited characters are the 5-stars, and even they get reruns (just ask anyone who waited for Kazuha's rerun - it felt like an eternity, but he came back eventually).
The Bottom Line
At the end of the day, Genshin Impact is a marathon, not a sprint. The game is designed to be played for years, with a constant stream of new content and character reruns. Making impulsive decisions based on temporary rate-ups can seriously hamper your long-term progression and satisfaction.
Yaoyao is wonderful. She's got a unique kit, adorable animations, and fills a niche role as a Dendro healer. But she's not worth potentially destroying months of careful pity management. Not when there's a completely free method to obtain her through Lantern Rite, and not when she'll be available in the permanent pool forever after Version 3.4.
So my advice? Close that wish menu. Save those Primogems. Complete the Lantern Rite event and select Yaoyao as your free character. Then use your hard-earned wishes on characters that truly excite you - whether that's Hu Tao's rerun, Yelan, or whoever else catches your fancy in future updates.
Your future self - sitting pretty with your dream team and a healthy stash of Primogems - will thank you for your restraint. Trust me on this one! 💎✨
Remember: in Genshin Impact, patience isn't just a virtue - it's a winning strategy. And right now, the most patient play is to let Yaoyao come to you through Lantern Rite while you keep your pity intact for the characters you truly desire. Happy pulling (or in this case, happy not pulling)! 🎆
