The lore of Genshin Impact continues to expand with each update, revealing fascinating stories about the world of Teyvat and its divine rulers. Among these legendary figures, Egeria, also known as the Mistress of Many Waters, stands out as one of the most intriguing characters in the game's rich mythology. As the original Hydro Archon who preceded Focalors, Egeria's legacy continues to influence the story of Fontaine and beyond in 2025.

The Origin of the Hydro Archon

Egeria's story begins in the primordial times of Teyvat. According to Oceanid legends, after the Hydro Dragon was removed as the "heart" of the Primordial Sea, Naberius created Egeria as its new heart. Although she possessed divine qualities, her substance was formed entirely from materials originating from Teyvat, making her unique among the gods.

Egeria became the ruler of Fontaine after the fall of Remuria and the death of its God King, Remus. She united the various tribes that remained after Remuria's destruction and established Fontaine's laws. Under her guidance, Fontaine entered an era of legal governance that has persisted to the present day in Genshin Impact's timeline.

The Original Sin and the Oceanids

Perhaps Egeria's most significant act—and what many consider her "original sin"—was the creation of the Oceanids. Legend states that the first Oceanid was born from Egeria's first tear, which then gave rise to all other Oceanids. Egeria assigned these water beings the task of "seeking an understanding of the diverse array of species and loving every creature."

When some Oceanids expressed a desire to live on land after witnessing human life, Egeria took water from the Primordial Sea and created humanoid forms for them. This action was deemed a sin by Celestia, who claimed a prophecy would come to dissolve the people of Fontaine to wash away their sins.

Egeria sent her Oceanid followers across Teyvat to act as her eyes and ears, with the strongest among them being Rhodeia of Loch. Their mission was to connect everyone in the world just as all water is connected—a noble goal that reflected Egeria's compassionate nature.

The Cataclysm and Egeria's Sacrifice

Five hundred years before the current events in Genshin Impact, the cataclysm struck Teyvat. Egeria was among several gods who ventured to Tunigi Hollow to combat the forces of the Abyss. During this conflict, she was slain, and her body transformed into the pure waters of the Amrita.

After her death, Greater Lord Rukkhadevata grew the Harvisptokhm from the Amrita to anchor Egeria's consciousness to the mortal realm. This allowed Egeria to continue containing and cleansing the Abyssal defilement in the Girdle of the Sands. The Harvisptokhm would maintain the seal at Tunigi Hollow for years, keeping the Abyss at bay while the Amrita nourished the Vourukasha Oasis.

Legacy and Prophecy

Following Egeria's passing, she was succeeded as Hydro Archon by Focalors, one of her Oceanid followers whom she had transformed into a human. However, many Oceanids refused to recognize Focalors and ventured across Teyvat to continue their former god's wishes in exile.

In present-day Fontaine, a prophecy has been circulating: all Fontainians are born with sin that cannot be absolved; one day, the waters will rise and dissolve the people of Fontaine, leaving only the Hydro Archon weeping on her throne. This prophecy is believed to be rooted in Egeria's last words.

In The Final Feast, Egeria states: "The original sin is the fairest: Everyone sinks... Make the most of the final feast, because for the sinners, the curtain call has come."

Egeria's Consciousness Awakens

During the World Quest series "Khvarena of Good and Evil," the Traveler teams up with the Pari Sorush to purify the defilement threatening the Harvisptokhm and awaken Egeria's consciousness. With help from Mihir and Rashnu, they perform the Rite of Chinvat at Tunigi Hollow to access the Harvisptokhm.

Inside, they traverse through Defiled Chambers within Egeria's consciousness to extract Spenta Hearts. Using these hearts in the Rite of Ab-Zohr, they bloom the Flower of Sanctity within the Gaokerena (a giant lotus within the Harvisptokhm) and awaken Egeria's consciousness, which unleashes Amrita across the land to rid it of defilement.

Focalors' Plan and Resolution

In a fascinating development revealed in 2025, we learn that Focalors spent centuries devising a plan to counter the prophecy left by Egeria. After becoming the Hydro Archon, Focalors separated her divinity from her body and spirit, creating Furina as a vessel. While Furina ruled Fontaine, Focalors accumulated energy to eventually deceive the heavenly principles.

When the prophecy began to come true, Focalors used this accumulated energy to destroy her divine aspect and the throne of the Hydro Archon, returning the Hydro authority to the Dragon Sovereign Neuvillette. With his full power restored, Neuvillette forgave the Fontainians their original sin, finally fulfilling Egeria's wish to turn the Oceanids into real people.

Egeria's story reminds us that even gods in Genshin Impact face difficult choices and consequences, making the world of Teyvat all the more captivating for players to explore in 2025 and beyond.
