Just got back from an insane aerial expedition in Genshin Impact and I had to share this with you guys! The Tonatiuh sky-ship is hands down one of the coolest locations I've discovered in my 5 years playing this game. Imagine a massive vessel just casually floating between the clouds, built by none other than the Lord of the Cinder City. The views are absolutely breathtaking!

The Endless Fall Experience

When I first reached Tonatiuh, my curiosity got the better of me (as usual) and I decided to jump off. Let me tell you—it's a LONG way down. You'll fall through gray clouds for what feels like forever before finally seeing Natlan's landscape appear below, looking like a miniature diorama. The developers really nailed the sense of scale here! Anyone else get that stomach-dropping feeling during the fall?

Unlocking the 'Under the Tonatiuh's Wings' Achievement

If you're achievement hunting like me, you'll definitely want to grab the 'Under the Tonatiuh's Wings' achievement. Despite what the name suggests, you won't find this directly on the main ship—it's actually located at two circular platforms northeast of Ochkanatlan island.

You have two options to reach these platforms:

  • Glide down from Tonatiuh (my preferred method)

  • Fly up using a Qucusaurus (more practical if you're starting from below)

Mastering the Relay Ball Puzzles

There are two puzzles waiting for you here, and they're both variations of the Relay Ball mechanic. If you haven't encountered these before, here's what you need to know:

  1. Puzzle Components:

  2. Relay Balls you can grab and throw using a Yumkasaurus ability

  3. Portal-like colored platforms serving as goals

  4. Ball Path Converters that change the Relay Ball's color to match the goal

First Puzzle - The Timing Challenge

The first puzzle is all about timing and rotation. Here's my strategy that worked after several failed attempts:

  1. Grab the Relay Ball using your Yumkasaurus ability (or a Scions of the Canopy character like Kinich)

  2. Throw the ball toward the Ball Path Converter

  3. The crucial part: as soon as the ball touches the Converter, pull the Grappling Hook underneath to rotate the positioning

  4. Watch the ball's trajectory and adjust your timing on subsequent attempts if needed

After solving this one, you'll get an Exquisite Chest (always nice!) and a Phlogiston Wind Current will appear, carrying you to the second puzzle.

Second Puzzle - The Advanced Rotation

The second puzzle follows similar principles but with an added twist:

  1. First, pull the Grappling Hook to rotate the Ball Path Converter until one aligns with the goal

  2. Throw the Relay Ball to the Converter on the opposite side

  3. While the ball is in mid-air, use the Grappling Hook to rotate the positioning

  4. If done correctly, the ball will sail smoothly into the goal

Your reward? A Precious Chest! Definitely worth the effort.

People Also Ask

How high is Tonatiuh above Natlan?

While HoYoverse hasn't given us exact measurements, based on the fall time (around 15-20 seconds), it's likely several thousand meters above the surface. The clouds completely obscure the ground during most of the fall, which gives you a sense of just how high up you are!

Can you return to Tonatiuh after completing the Natlan storyline?

Absolutely! Unlike some temporary story locations, Tonatiuh remains accessible after you've completed the main quests. This is especially useful if you missed any chests or puzzles during your first visit.

Are there any hidden achievements related to Tonatiuh?

Besides the 'Under the Tonatiuh's Wings' achievement, there are a couple of hidden ones tied to specific interactions on the ship. I won't spoil them here, but try interacting with everything you see! 😉

My Future Predictions for Sky Exploration

I can't help but wonder—is Tonatiuh just the beginning of HoYoverse's aerial content? With the incredible success of this sky-ship concept, I'm betting we'll see even more elaborate sky domains in the upcoming Fontaine expansion rumored for late 2025.

Imagine entire floating archipelagos or perhaps even aerial combat mechanics specifically designed for these environments! Wouldn't it be amazing if we could eventually pilot our own smaller airships between regions?

The way Genshin has evolved since its launch in 2020, I wouldn't put anything past the developers. What aerial features would YOU like to see added to the game?

So there you have it, travelers! Next time you're soaring through Natlan, take a detour to these floating platforms and test your puzzle-solving skills. The views alone are worth the trip, and those chests aren't going to open themselves!

Happy adventuring! ✨
